This wonky cake from 2014 was the first painting I made after NOT painting for 20 years. I made the occasional card for birthdays, but not much else.
A few months before this painting, I had doodled a wonky cake on a bookmark, colored it in with some pilot fineline markers, and realized it was super fun and easy. I didn’t have to think about it and I enjoyed the process of making it.
I started drawing and coloring more of them until I felt like a canvas might be fun.
I was right and got completely lost in the process. After that I never NOT painted again.
Now I keep it as a reminder - that creativity doesn’t have to be a struggle, and how perfectionism might have kept me from painting for another 20 years if I hadn’t stopped thinking and just started painting.
